The Forgotten Front
The Forgotten Front is a documentary about the Resistance movement in Bologna, the biggest city on the front in Northern Italy. It chronicles the conflict along the Gothic Line between 1943 and 1945, the occupation of the city by the German army during the Italian Social Republic and the Liberation struggle fought by the partisans with the support of the people. The title, recalls the expression used by The New York Times on December 11, 1944, when the Allies’ offense in Italy halted for many months, and the burden of fighting the nazi-fascist troops on the ground was left on the shoulders of the resistance groups. Using original footage from the time, the documentary is the result of great efforts to recover unreleased videos and photographs. The main challenge was narrating the guerrilla warfare in the city, carried out by the GAPs (Patriotic Action Groups), about which there are very few documents, due to the need for anonymity and secrecy of the partisans.
