Aemilia- Guardare la mafia negli occhi
In Brescello, the town of Peppone and Don Camillo, four killers disguised as
Carabinieri kill a Calabrian offender under house arrest, a bomb sows panic in a bar
in the center of Reggio Emilia, another disintegrates the Sassuolo Revenue Agency.
Then hundreds of arson attacks and dozens of unsolved homicides, all of which
occurred between Piacenza and Ferrara at the turn of the 2000s.
What is happening?
The Emilians are unable to understand, they do not decipher these events in the right
way. The antibodies of a proud people find it difficult to get going because they are
unable to recognize the danger of an unknown enemy who moves under the radar.
It will take many years and the trial with the most defendants in the history of our
Republic, celebrated in a specially built bunker room like that of the Maxi Process of
Palermo to shed some light.
Through the testimonies of the investigators and the “voices from within” of the
‘Ndrangheta (the audio and video interceptions made against the defendants), we
want to tell the investigations begun in 2010 and completed in 2014 which certify
the existence in the Emilia area of a new form of organized crime, a mafia 2.0 that
has abandoned kidnappings, protection money and drug trafficking.
A mafia that shows up in a suit and tie and produces rivers of money to the detriment
of the community, polluting the legal economy and distorting the rules of the market:
carousel fraud, false invoices, debt collection, reduction of costs on workers’ wages,
illegal disposal of special waste….
The same men, Ndrangheta killers in the 1990s, have now become the entrepreneurs
who govern the cement cycle, logistics, waste disposal, as well as various commercial
activities. It is precisely their intercepted voices that argue that false invoices make
more money than drugs.
And when the Prefect of Reggio Emilia, Antonella De Miro, from Agrigento in Sicily,
and vaccinated against the mafia, begins to ban important Calabrian companies, the
reaction of the organization is unleashed, which does not know it is being listened to
by the investigators.
This is how we discover how much the ‘Ndrangheta 2.0 has infiltrated the ganglia of
civil society. As well as in business, in politics and in the local media and even in the
institutions.
On 28 January 2015, the investigation closed with a request for 203 arrests, in
addition to the men of the ‘Ndrangheta, professionals, administrators, politicians,
business executives, Police and Carabinieri officials ended up in prison, many of
these born and raised in Emilia Romagna.

At the press conference, the National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Franco Roberti defines
the investigation and its conclusions as “historic and unprecedented” and adds “the
modernity of this mafia organization is impressive, which has its own political vision
of roots”.
Through interviews, very rare archival materials, investigation results and an indepth
and compelling fictional reconstruction, “Aemilia” will tell how the guard must
always remain high and that only a vigilant civil society can defeat crime.
