Il complotto di Tirana
The true story of one of the biggest and cleverest scams in the history of contemporary art. On 3 December 2000, a mysterious person pretended to be the photographer Oliviero Toscani on the web, argued with Giancarlo Politi, director of one of the most important magazines in the sector, and then accepted an invitation to present four revolutionary artists at the newly-established Tirana Biennial as a gift of peace. Uncomfortable, inappropriate and even morally offensive works. One of the artists is a pedophile, one is a pornographer, and one is the official photographer of Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda.
The scam is unmasked too late, a few days after 11 September, when everything becomes incredibly embarrassing. However, it was not terrorism, nor a plot hatched by some secret organization: the actions of the perpetrators hidden behind the hoax turned out to be pure and simple works of art. A revenge against the system that had excluded them as artists. But one big question remains: what happened to the four artists presented by the fake Oliviero Toscani? Above all, do they exist
